Playing Poker in Casinos – Short guide

May 14th, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

poker-casinoA lot of amateur poker players are content playing poker with friends for petty cash or poker chips. Such games often take place in a garage or a basement card table.  For people a little more serious, playing poker in a casino is the next step up.

Many states do not have legalized gambling and if gambling is legal, there are only certain areas where it is allowed.  These areas are usually specially licensed casinos.  While there is not necessarily a fee to enter the casino, there is a fee to partake in the games within.  Casinos have set dealers for each table.  The dealer’s job is to make sure each player abides by the rules, as well to deal the cards for the game.
In order to play poker in a casino, you must contribute some amount of money.  Your money is then converted in to chips, with certain colors of chips denoting an amount of currency.  When you decide on a poker table, you are dealt two cards and from those two cards you decide whether or not you want to continue with the game.  If you decide to continue, you put a set amount of chips in the middle (pot) and you will not receive the chips back unless you have the winning hand.  There is also a contribution to the pot called a “blind”.  Eventually, each person at the table has to pay the blind, which is a set amount you pay in to the pot without ever seeing the first two cards.  You then can decide if you want to continue with the game and make another payment after you see your first two cards.  Big blind and little blind are also used in private, non-casino poker games.  The stakes at a casino are higher though, since you are playing with real money.

Another popular spot to play poker is in an online casino. There are several advantages to online casino gaming: you can play 24 hours a day from your own personal computer, you do not have to leave your house or even get dressed for the occasion. With online poker, you play against other players and not against the house. The way a poker room makes money is as follows: the room deducts a certain percentage from each pot – called the “rake” – which is normally between 3 and 5 % of that aforementioned pot. On the internet, you will find companies that will give you up to 33 % of the paid rake back. No matter if you win or lose, you can receive your rakeback paid into your bankroll account on a monthly basis. This is another great advantage of playing online poker.

Online Gambling

Gambling on the internet is growing in popularity.  Online gambling is available on numerous sites and easily accessible, which many feel is a very negative opportunity for internet users.  Online gambling is increasing rapidly and the opportunities to gamble show up on websites that can often be thought are geared towards minors.
Online gambling can encompass a number of games, including most card games.  You are given virtual cards and can play the game similarly to you would in real life.  The big differences are that you use a credit card to fund the game and you never meet the other players or the dealer.
There are also a number of online casinos.  Through online casinos, someone wishing to gamble can choose from a number of slot games.  Instead of pulling the lever usually found on real slot machines, gamblers simply click a computer key.  Like online card games, virtual slot machines are funded by a credit card.
Opportunities for online Bingo and sports betting are also readily accessible.  The legality of online sports betting has been questioned again and again.  A law established in 2006 made it illegal for a bank to directly transfer money to a gambling site.  The law has had negative effects on the online gaming community.
A severe problem with online gambling is that the gambler can lose track of funds much easier.  Playing online seems like much more of an arcade game and therefore it can be easy to lose track of how much is spent or how much time has gone by.  Several gamers have wracked up astronomical debt by not knowing when to call it quits.  Critics also worry that online gambling is appealing to young children who may not know the difference between typical games and gambling, thus potentially turning in to life long gamblers.
