Online Poker Bonuses

July 31st, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

Online poker is really fun to play, and you can win (or lose) cash at the same time! Many online poker rooms offer bonus codes, which may offer a wide variety of different kinds of incentives for signing up with them. Each bonus tends to have its pros and cons, but most people agree it is much better to go into a poker room with one instead of without one! One type of poker bonus is called a deposit bonus. A deposit bonus typically ranges from 5-100% of your first deposit, it is rare, but you can find bonuses more than 100% sometimes.

A deposit bonus is great; you get free money to play with! This should be particularly appealing if you are a novice at poker, because you get a chance to learn poker a little better before you start taking losses. One of the cons of of this type of bonus, is that you are restricted by what is known as a wagering requirement. A wagering requirement is a restriction on your account that says you can’t withdraw any of your money until you have wagered a certain amount of it. Usually, a wagering requirement is 5-20% of the amount you deposited plus the bonus they gave you for depositing. It is understandable why they do this, if this restriction did not exist everyone would just deposit 500 dollars, get a 100% bonus somewhere, and withdraw 1000, they would be out of business in under 24 hours.

The type of bonus above is known as a cashable deposit bonus, you can withdraw everything including winnings and money left over from the bonus once you have completed your wagering requirement. The other type is known as a sticky deposit bonus, this means the amount of bonus you receive can be used to wager, and you get to keep winnings from it, but you can not withdraw the amount of the bonus no matter how much you have wagered. Another type of bonus is called a free roll bonus, which is usually used for poker tournaments. The rules for a free roll are different at ever different room, but they give you a free entry into a poker tournament(s) and give you a chance to win the big prize without putting up cash!

Online poker is certainly fun, and with time and patience, you can get very good at it. Every bonus has it’s downside, but it is far better to play with one, than without one. Not all types of poker bonuses are listed here, just remember to check all of the terms and conditions before you choose to take advantage of a bonus.

Playing Poker in Casinos – Short guide

May 14th, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

poker-casinoA lot of amateur poker players are content playing poker with friends for petty cash or poker chips. Such games often take place in a garage or a basement card table.  For people a little more serious, playing poker in a casino is the next step up.

Many states do not have legalized gambling and if gambling is legal, there are only certain areas where it is allowed.  These areas are usually specially licensed casinos.  While there is not necessarily a fee to enter the casino, there is a fee to partake in the games within.  Casinos have set dealers for each table.  The dealer’s job is to make sure each player abides by the rules, as well to deal the cards for the game.
In order to play poker in a casino, you must contribute some amount of money.  Your money is then converted in to chips, with certain colors of chips denoting an amount of currency.  When you decide on a poker table, you are dealt two cards and from those two cards you decide whether or not you want to continue with the game.  If you decide to continue, you put a set amount of chips in the middle (pot) and you will not receive the chips back unless you have the winning hand.  There is also a contribution to the pot called a “blind”.  Eventually, each person at the table has to pay the blind, which is a set amount you pay in to the pot without ever seeing the first two cards.  You then can decide if you want to continue with the game and make another payment after you see your first two cards.  Big blind and little blind are also used in private, non-casino poker games.  The stakes at a casino are higher though, since you are playing with real money.

Another popular spot to play poker is in an online casino. There are several advantages to online casino gaming: you can play 24 hours a day from your own personal computer, you do not have to leave your house or even get dressed for the occasion. With online poker, you play against other players and not against the house. The way a poker room makes money is as follows: the room deducts a certain percentage from each pot – called the “rake” – which is normally between 3 and 5 % of that aforementioned pot. On the internet, you will find companies that will give you up to 33 % of the paid rake back. No matter if you win or lose, you can receive your rakeback paid into your bankroll account on a monthly basis. This is another great advantage of playing online poker.

Gambling Addiction

May 14th, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

Gambling can be a fun way to pass time or spend a weekend with friends.  As long as you know when to stop or how much money to spend, there is not anything necessarily wrong with gambling.  Contrarily, in tough economic times more and more people are turning to gambling in hopes of finding a quick fix for monetary ailments.  Worse yet, some people find once they start gambling, they are addicted and cannot stop.
Gambling addicts often find themselves in severe debt.  Some addicts find themselves so entangled in gambling that they actually crave it when they are not engaged with gambling in some way, much as smokers crave cigarettes.  It is estimated that approximately two million Americans suffer from a gambling addiction.  This is about 1% of the population.
The signs of a gambling addiction vary from person to person.  One sign may as simple as a preoccupation.  This is defined as the person constantly thinking about gambling and when they can gamble next.  He or she may find excuses not to participate in obligations and instead will escape to go gamble, or gamble with money that was set aside for something else.
A quick sense of achievement or excitement, or what some feel is an escape from the world is what gets many people addicted to gambling.  Eventually, gamblers build up a tolerance and need to spend more and more money in order to achieve the same sense of satisfaction.  On the same page, gamblers may suffer from withdrawal when not allowed to gamble.  Withdrawal may lead to irritability and agitation if the gambler tries to quit the game “cold turkey”.
Eventually gambling addiction will lead to lying.  The gambler will lie about what they are doing and how they are spending money.  Loss of control follows, where the gambler is unable to quit gambling no matter how many times they try.  There are several programs including free programs, online programs, and anonymous programs that can help an addict break the habit.

Online Gambling

May 14th, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

Gambling on the internet is growing in popularity.  Online gambling is available on numerous sites and easily accessible, which many feel is a very negative opportunity for internet users.  Online gambling is increasing rapidly and the opportunities to gamble show up on websites that can often be thought are geared towards minors.
Online gambling can encompass a number of games, including most card games.  You are given virtual cards and can play the game similarly to you would in real life.  The big differences are that you use a credit card to fund the game and you never meet the other players or the dealer.
There are also a number of online casinos.  Through online casinos, someone wishing to gamble can choose from a number of slot games.  Instead of pulling the lever usually found on real slot machines, gamblers simply click a computer key.  Like online card games, virtual slot machines are funded by a credit card.
Opportunities for online Bingo and sports betting are also readily accessible.  The legality of online sports betting has been questioned again and again.  A law established in 2006 made it illegal for a bank to directly transfer money to a gambling site.  The law has had negative effects on the online gaming community.
A severe problem with online gambling is that the gambler can lose track of funds much easier.  Playing online seems like much more of an arcade game and therefore it can be easy to lose track of how much is spent or how much time has gone by.  Several gamers have wracked up astronomical debt by not knowing when to call it quits.  Critics also worry that online gambling is appealing to young children who may not know the difference between typical games and gambling, thus potentially turning in to life long gamblers.

Illegal Gambling?

May 14th, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

Illegal gambling in the U.S. is a federal offense.  Illegal gambling is identified as gambling practices that take place in an unlicensed establishment and are done for the profit of an individual.  By this definition, friendly neighborhood pick-up poker games are not illegal, as they are not performed as a business.
Illegal gambling can take the shape of dog fighting or racing, placing bets on game outcomes, or established poker games for profit.  While it is considered a federal crime if conducted as a business, each state has rules and regulations defining illegal gambling and what the punishment is for breaking the law.  A person may also be found in violation of illegal gambling regulations if they are under the legal gambling age set by the state of residence.
Due to the unregulated practices of online gambling, there is a movement to make online gambling illegal.  There have also been cries that certain network television game shows partake in illegal gambling.  Such shows that request viewers to send a .99 cent text message with the answer to a question in order to possibly win something have been brought under review.  Some raffles can even be considered illegal gambling and therefore whoever is hosting the raffle must be aware of what the state legislation dictates.
Many people feel that opening more legal casinos and gambling establishments will cut back on illegal gambling.  This has not been the case though, as recent studies have found.  People interested in illegal gambling are either interested in betting on sports or activities that are not allowed by any state (such as dog fighting) or they feel that they can stake less money and win more money by gambling in illegal operations.

Las Vegas tour

May 14th, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

The Las Vegas Strip, commonly referred to as only Las Vegas or The Strip, is a four-mile stretch that in reality only partially lies in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The majority of The Strip is in the unincorporated regions of Paradise, Nevada, and Winchester, Nevada.   The Strip is made up of some of the largest, most luxurious hotel properties in the world.  As a matter of fact, The Strip contains eighteen of the twenty-five largest hotels on the globe.

The Strip is famous for gambling and flamboyance.  Hotels are often themed outrageous themes ranging from European influenced themes to the hotel Treasure Island.  Flashy shows are available for viewing in almost every hotel.  These shows include famous musicians, Cirque du Soleil, or magic acts that will leave viewers breathless.
The first hotel located on what is now called The Strip (previously the area held different names) was the El Rancho Vegas, which opened in 1941.  Several other hotels followed suit, making Las Vegas a popular attraction.  Smaller hotels thrived until 1989 when The Mirage opened.  The first mega-resort, The Mirage set a new standard for Las Vegas.

There have been several attempts to make Las Vegas a more family-friendly vacation spot.  Theme parks were opened and hotels boasted family oriented shows.  Some hotels even revamped their entire themes in order to make the atmosphere more welcoming for kids.  The movement has not been well accepted however, and Las Vegas remains a vacation spot that is most enjoyed by adults.

Aside from amazing resorts and titillating shows, The Strip is famous for the gambling opportunities.  Almost every hotel offers some sort of gambling like Poker, Blackjack or Roulette, and certainly every resort offers multiple gambling opportunities.  For decades, Las Vegas held the title of highest-grossing gambling region.  In 2006 Las Vegas lost the title to Macau.

Gambling in the US

September 30th, 2009 Cold Aces No comments

Gambling in the US is a billion dollar a year industry.  In 2006, gambling revenue came in at USD $90.96 billion.  Gambling falls under federal jurisdiction, but each state is allowed to ban or regulate gambling as the state so chooses.  Almost every state has some form of lottery so therefore almost every state has some form of gambling.

Nevada is the only U.S. state that allows gambling on a statewide basis.  Other states restrict gambling to certain to certain cities or Native American reservations.  Still other states confine gambling to riverboats.  Online gambling is an exception to most state policies.  Online gambling is difficult to regulate so even if gambling is outlawed in a state, residents of that state can still partake in online gambling. Read more about poker rules, tips and strategies at launchpoker.com.

There are 19 states that allow commercial casinos on non-reservation land.  There are approximately 450 of these casinos.  With the exception of nine states, every other state in the U.S. allows a lottery.  There are different forms of lottery and the forms are based off of the purchase of a ticket for a small amount of money.  The ticket either requires you to choose numbers, pull tabs, or scratch off circles in order to reveal if you are a winner.  In the variation of the lottery where you choose numbers, the winning number combination is later revealed in a random drawing.  The winnings from lotteries vary from a few dollars to millions of dollars.

Reservation-based gambling began in 1979.  Such gambling is controversial, as some Native Americans do not want non-Native Americans on reservation land.  However, the casinos create thousands of jobs and generate revenue in the community.  Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988, all revenue must be used for the government or to better the community such as by building schools, houses, roads or funding healthcare.
